Eastern Branch - Awards

Awards Committee

The Awards Committee is composed of the five living immediate Past Presidents, the most immediate Past President serving as Chair. The responsibility of the Chair of the Awards Committee is to solicit nominations and supporting documentation for the L. O. Howard Award, distribute that information to the Committee members, and by consensus, name the recipient. The L. O. Howard Award is described in the December 1976 Bulletin of the ESA 22: 433. The other Eastern Branch award responsibilities lie within the province of the Graduate Student Committee (the Eastern Branch M.S. Award [Asa Fitch Memorial Award] and the nominee for the John H. Comstock Award from the Eastern Branch [awarded by the Parent Society at the National Meeting]) and the Screening Committee for the five ESA Recognition Awards. The Awards Committee periodically presents awards to the out-going Governing Board Representative, Secretary, and Treasurer, as well as the Herb Streu Meritorious Service Award.

The L. O. Howard Award

A timetable should be agreed upon each year in consultation with the Program Committee and the Secretary, to facilitate publication in the Program of a photograph and appropriate accompanying text. That text is normally written by the awardee's nominator at the request of the Awards Committee Chair.

The award itself is prepared by the Secretary, with suitable text, again supplied by the nominator at the request of the Committee Chair, and is presented by the Committee Chair (or Branch President) at the appropriate time during the Annual Meeting of the Eastern Branch.

Nominees are solicited by the Committee Chair from all major divisions and departments of Entomology, including academic and experiment station departments, and federal and industrial divisions. Nominations may also be made by individuals. In 1982 this committee and the Branch Screening Committee for ESA Recognition Awards joined forces in revising the mailing list, made a single mailing and used the same date for submission of nominations. A sample solicitation letter is appended; encourage its circulation. Indicate to those nominating candidates the previous year that they may renominate nominees not selected if they wish.

A notice requesting nominations for the Award should appear in the July or August ESA Newsletter. The Award winner should also be announced in the ESA newsletter. In addition, the Secretary and the Chairs of the Public Information, Registration, and Program Committees should be notified at the time of selection to help them with their plans.

The Herb T. Streu Meritorious Service Award

The Herb T. Streu Meritorious Service Award is intended to provide timely recognition of Eastern Branch members for outstanding service to the society.

1. Is a non-competitive award that consists of a certificate stating the contribution and is to be awarded at the annual Eastern Branch meeting.

2. Will originate within the Awards Committee and will not be solicited nor require supporting documentation or supplemental information -- originating from within the Committee does not preclude a letter from a member of the Eastern Branch requesting a consideration of an individual (or group, or department of entomology) for the award.

3. The award will not be presented annually but only when the Awards Committee deems it appropriate.

4. There will be no limit to the number of awards that may be presented at a particular annual meeting.

5. Unanimity by the members of the Awards Committee is not required, however, four members must approve.

6. The award will be presented to living members and is not restricted by age or status.
